History and Development
1990s |
Birth of the idea of a Science Center in Wels |
2000 |
Initiation of the Energyland project to establish the City of Wels as regional energy capital; the driving forces behind this idea were Erich Rondonell and Johann Grassegger of E-Werk Wels, Kurt Leeb of Mea Solar, Gerhard Zettler (then with Wels Strom), Wels Mayor Peter Koits and Deputy Mayor Hermann Wimmer. They were joined by Leo Ludick, an early proponent of the idea of a Science Center for Wels. |
2003 |
The Energyland feasibility study recommends implementing (in addition to various other projects) a science center focused on renewable forms of energy in Wels. |
2004 |
The Energybus—a science center on wheels—hits the road. |
2005 |
The Province of Upper Austria issues a call for proposals for the center’s location. |
2006/2007 |
Two-phase selection process: operational and exhibition concept |
May 2008 |
Management contract signed by Petri & Tiemann GmbH of Bremen/Hamburg, Germany; Kraftwerk Living Technologies GmbH; the City of Wels |

Commencement of an EU-wide architectural competition that attracted a total of 38 entries from Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, the UK and Portugal |
